The Ponzo Illusion
S - | Ep - | |
- min | ||
a geometrical-optical illusion that was first demonstrated by the Italian psychologist Mario Ponzo (1882_1960) in 1911. He suggested that the human mind judges an object's size based on its background. In the Ponzo illusion (1911) two identical lines across a pair of converging lines, similar to railway tracks, are drawn. The upper line looks longer because we interpret the converging sides according to linear perspective as parallel lines receding into the distance. In this context, we interpret the upper line as though it were farther away, so we see it as longer _ a farther object would have to be longer than a nearer one for both to produce retinal images of the same size.

S - | Ep - | 1948/06/18 |
Film Short | 30 min TV-G | |
COM FAM | USA |
The first Olympics, starring Hercules (looking, but not quite sounding, like a really pumped-up Bluto), who challenges anyone to do the same feats as him. Popeye takes that challenge, of course. First, they battle animals, with Bluto pulling the skins off two wild elephants and Popeye turning three lions into a nesting set. The discus throw doesn't go well, with Herc's disc swooping Popeye into Herc's hand. The javelin is even worse for Popeye, with Herc throwing him all the way to the moon. This gives him a chance to go after Olive in typical Bluto fashion; her cries of help reach Popeye, who prays to the Greek goddess Spinachia, who delivers a can of spinach to him.
